CLUB COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

STUDENT ASSISTANCE FUND

SI of Albany provides assistance to under privileged children in local elementary, middle and high schools as requested by school officials.  Each year the club prepares two complete school supply kits for each grade in the fifteen elementary schools in Albany and Jefferson.  Throughout the year the Committee shops for clothing and assists the school officials in a variety of ways to help the less fortunate children of our community.  Funding for this project comes from the sale of poinsettias, proceeds of the Gift from the Heart letter campaign, and community donations.

Awareness of Breast Cancer and Other Women’s Diseases

SI of Albany provides funding for mammograms and other medical procedures for women without medical insurance in our community and county.  In 1999 the club completed our $25,000 pledge to the Albany Hospital Foundation to help purchase equipment for the new Women’s Imaging Center.  Since that time Walk for the Cause proceeds have been disbursed to the Linn County Breast and Cervical Cancer Coalition, Albany General Hospital Foundation, the Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, the Samaritan Albany General Hospital Women’s Center, the InReach Clinic and the Samaritan Evergreen Hospice.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH – STUDENT OF THE YEAR

Each month the counselors at South Albany High School and West Albany High School chose a Student of the Month based on that student’s volunteer and leadership activities.  At the end of the year the club chooses two Students of the Year and each student receives a check for $500.  The funds awarded to the Student of the Year are to be used toward college expenses or to be donated to his or her favorite charity.  Funding for this project comes from the sale of poinsettias, and community donations.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT FUND

This project was developed to serve the needs of women, children and the elderly.  Sample toiletries are distributed to shelters, the Albany Boy’s and Girl’s club and the Department of Human Services.  Other projects include purchases of wheel chair bags for the elderly and working with DHS to identify the needs of children entering foster care. Funding for this project comes from the sale of poinsettias, and community donations.

HUMAN RIGHTS/STATUS OF WOMEN PROJECT

This committee looks for ways to help women reach equal status in the home, in the workplace and in the global community. Each year a local business is recognized for their dedication to helping women achieve these goals.  Funding for this project comes from the BBQ proceeds and community donations.
